Loading the handyman job price...

Handyman work is a long list of small jobs, and small jobs are where pricing goes wrong. Charge 30 minutes for a 30-minute repair and you lose money once you count the drive, the parking and the stop at the hardware store. The calculator here prices a job from hours, materials and fees, and applies your minimum charge automatically when the job is small.

How the calculator prices a job

  • Labor = hours on site × your hourly rate
  • Materials = your cost × (1 + material markup)
  • Fees = a trip or supply-run fee, if you charge one
  • Price = labor + materials + fees, or your minimum charge if that is higher

Two worked examples

A three-hour job. Hanging shelves and fixing a door: 3 hours at $75, $120 of materials marked up 20%, no trip fee, $150 minimum.

  • Labor: 3 × $75 = $225
  • Materials: $120 × 1.20 = $144
  • Total: $369, with $24 of profit on the materials

A quick fix. Replacing a cabinet hinge: 30 minutes at $75 and a $10 part.

  • Labor: 0.5 × $75 = $37.50
  • Materials: $10 × 1.20 = $12
  • Subtotal: $49.50
  • Your minimum is $150, so the price is $150

The second job is why minimums exist. Without one, you would drive across town for less than $50.

  • Trip charge: $30 to $80, sometimes applied when the handyman has to go buy materials
  • Mileage: $0.30 to $0.60 per mile, or a flat $10 to $50 outside the service area
  • Day rate: $320 to $600
  • Material markup: 20% to 50% or more

Flat prices for common jobs

Many customers prefer a flat price. HomeGuide lists these typical ranges:

Job Typical price
Install a ceiling fan $75 to $150
Replace a lock $75 to $200
Install an appliance $100 to $250
Install a sink $230 to $650
Install a door $225 to $825
Deck or porch repair $500 to $2,600

Use your own time records to set flat prices. If a ceiling fan takes you 90 minutes door to door, price it from that, not from the list.

Hourly or flat rate?

Hourly is fair for jobs with unknowns, like troubleshooting or repairs where you cannot see the damage yet. Customers may worry the clock is running.

Flat rate is easier for customers to say yes to, and it rewards you for being quick. It needs good estimates, or you absorb the overrun.

Many handymen use flat rates for common jobs and hourly for repairs, with a minimum charge on everything.

Set your hourly rate first

All of this rests on your hourly rate. If you have not worked it out from your income goal, taxes, business costs and real billable hours, start with the contractor hourly rate calculator. A rate that looks good on paper can fall below break-even once you count unpaid hours.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a handyman charge per hour in 2026?

HomeGuide reports $50 to $80 for self-employed handymen and $75 to $125 for corporate services. Your own costs set the floor.

Should I charge a minimum fee?

Most handymen do. HomeGuide puts typical minimums at $75 to $200. It covers the travel and setup that every visit costs you.

How much should I mark up materials?

HomeGuide reports 20% to 50% or more. It covers the time to source, buy and haul materials, plus returns and waste.

Should I bundle small jobs?

Yes. Encouraging customers to save up a "honey-do list" turns several minimum charges into one productive half-day, which is better for both of you.
